Summer School 2018

The 2018 Summer School of the LabEx DynamiTe, co-organized with the LabEx Urban Futures, will take place
from 24 to 28 September 2018, at the Villa Finaly in Florence (Italy).

The main focus will be:

“Massive spatial data:
challenges in acquisition, treatment and use for territories”

This Summer School will focus on emerging and heterogeneous spatial data sources. It aims to offer its participants:

i) an overview of how these data can be used to drive research on territorial dynamics;
ii) an understanding of contemporary expertise (methods and tools) required to process and model with these data.

The School is intended for scientists with intermediary programming skills and familiar with quantitative methods, and primarily for young researchers (master/PhD students and postdocs). The week will be organised as follows:

Each morning, a recognized scholar in her/his field will give a plenary lesson about the advances that have been possible thanks to big data sources, the questions and issues raised, the relevant methods, some important results, in addition to the speaker’s own research results/agenda. The topics covered by the five morning lectures are: smart cities, mobility and transport, geoscience and environmental issues, spatial networks, political and societal dimensions of big data.

Keynote speakers:

  • Marc BARTHELEMY, Institute for Theoretical Physics (IPhT), France
  • Marta C. GONZALEZ, University of California, Berkeley, United States
  • Catherine MORENCY, Polytechnique Montréal, Canada
  • Remko UIJLENHOET, Wageningen University, Netherlands
  • Taylor SHELTON, Mississippi State University, United States
  • Matthew ZOOK, University of Kentucky, United States

Each afternoon a R-tutorial on methods and libraries useful to perform successive tasks of an empirical research/data science project: data collection, data wrangling, spatial analysis, statistical modelling, geovisualization.

Tutorials presented by:

  • Kim ANTUNEZ, DREES, Paris, France
  • Etienne COME, IFSTTAR, Champs/Marne, France
  • Clémentine COTTINEAU, CNRS, Paris, France
  • Paul CHAPRON, IGN, Saint-Mandé, France
