First Summer School of the LabEx DynamiTe

Summer School 2014

In July 2014, the LabEx DynamiTe organized its first Summer School. Held in Florence (Italy), it gathered more than 30 students for a week of classes focused on the exploration of spatial systems.

A successful first edition…

A diversified scientific program

“Spatial Structures and Dynamics, Methods and Tools for Exploring Spatial Systems”, such was the title of the LabEx DynamiTe first Summer School, organized in Florence (Italy) from July 14th to July 19th 2014. On this occasion,  35 students from France and abroad gathered in the Villa Finaly, where the event took place.

The École d'Été 2014Summer School provided them with in-depth reference courses. The level of lectures ranged from introductory to advanced, as students were not expected to be familiar with all the fields covered. Lecture topics addressed current trends and needs for the exploration of spatial systems. Theories, concepts and methods referred to various disciplines dealing with spatial systems, from humanities to computer science and physics. A very large panel of topics were addressed: agent-based modelling, cellular automata, companion modeling, complex networks, complexity, geosimulation, multilevel modeling, spatio-temporal modeling and spatial statistics.

A prestigious teaching team

École d'Été 2014And to address these topics, 17 renowned researchers, coming from all over the world and working in various fields of study (geography, archeology, computer science, mathematics, environment, health, etc.) were invited. Thanks to conferences (in the morning) and tutorials (in the afternoon), organized throughout the Summer School, they could interact and share with all the attendees.

Furthermore, individual coaching sessions were proposed. A unique occasion for the attendees to get feedbacks and advices on their research projects from the invited lecturers.

A Friendly atmosphere

École d'Été 2014Besides the coaching sessions, attendees and invited lecturers got a lot of occasions to exchange during this week in Florence. A friendly atmosphere, enhanced by the welcoming environment of the Villa Finally, reigned on the Summer School.

The tutorials helped to strengthen the cohesion between all the persons involved in the event. Meant for the students, they were also attended by some of the invited lecturers.

Through all these interactions, a real community gradually formed during this week in Florence.

As a matter of fact, the very first Summer School of the LabEx DynamiTe held all its promises. Besides the diversified scientific program proposed to the students, it offered them the opportunity to meet a lot of accomplished researchers, in an environment conducive to discussion and exchange.
